Heey!
Yep, I haven’t had any revelations lately :), so it’s going to be a short update about what I’m still up to:
Well firstly, I’ve been last weekend to Bucharest to the “IBM Academic Days”. It’s been supposed to be a very informative conference about how IBM can cooperate with the Academic institutions in Romania. Well … it was ahem … bullshit. I was expecting far more from IBM than offering cool coffee breaks and good dinners at Hilton hotel. I was amazed to see how some of the speakers (sales men) were laking basic presentation skills. The content wasn’t customized for the academic market at all … it was like selling sessions for a big company, also the agenda was delayed by 1,5 hours on the first day. I’m aware that they presented also their educational cooperations and programs but they manged to present it in an almost unintelligible form. I think 2 of the ~8 sessions were really worth watching. As I said before, an university doesn’t need to “manage it’s business processes”, it has none :D, we live in Romania and you need to adapt your presentations to this particular market.
Anyway, I was proactive and gave extensive feedback :).Of course if I skip the nasty parts, I’ve gained some new contacts, knowledge about IBM and its very interesting collaborations and educational programs (IBM Internships, an IBM master program, Linux student contests, etc.) and also some of the amazing software products we could make use of.
Secondly, lately my job really sucks (it’s complicated) and as Steve Jobs so simply put it in his Stanford graduation speech:
“If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
So, for the first time, I’m seriously considering starting my own company. I have 2 options and 2 different friends as partners, one on web design and the other one on HR. I know it’s not easy being an entrepreneur. One of my friends, Stefan, has started a company, a very successful one, and is now in a deep crisis because some scrupulousness people are determined to put his little company out of business. I’m determined to succeed and I’ll keep you posted :).
Stefan, this song[1] is for you, cheer up, I’m sure you’ll make it. To listen to it, open “Lion’s Radio” and scroll down to it.
Cheers,
The Lion.[1]
