Becoming an Alumnus
December 21st, 2006

NPS 2006 Alumni Well, it took some time to get back on track. I’ve had a pretty busy month. Let’s start then, where was I? Ah yes … Becoming an Alumnus. Well, I’m doing it for 1 year: getting out of AIESEC. For everyone its a different experience, some choose not to look back, some choose to gradually move out. For me not looking back was not an option. It would have broken me apart. AIESEC is addictive and letting go means changing a way of life that defined me for the last 5 years. And it’s hard, very hard to substitute what AIESEC gives you with the things you find in real life.

I’ve been to NPS some three weeks ago, and realized it’s finally over. It’s been a long but steady process and I finally accepted it and moved on. It no longer takes my breath a way, it no longer scares me to start new.

I’ve been going trough my AIESEC locker in the last days, re-reading some of my sugar-cubes, reading pages of my AIESEC agendas, unfolding hitchhiking signs, counting my conference badges, deciding what to keep and what to throw away. It’s been bringing back some very cool, some very funny, some sad, some happy memories. I think I cried a bit at the end, but laughed a lot during. I figured out some mind-blowing numbers too: I’ve attended around 63 conferences, filled 8 whole agendas, gathered around 35 T-Shirts and lot’s of other cool stuff. I’ve traveled to 6 countries (to some of them twice) and have meet more people than I can count and have right now a network of around 320 people.

All this started with a shy 21 year old kid that walked into a crowded room scared by all these unknown faces, trying hard to find a spot near his school buddies, to feel safe, secure.

In 2004 I’ve been to a conference that I will always remember, called YouCan. It’s tag line was “If you can dream it, you can do it”. I know I can.
